what the fuck is wrong with texas?
Just caught this disturbing story about a Texas mother who hung her four young daughters and then herself in the closet of her mobile home. What?? But what's worse, check this out, take from the article:
"Texas has seen a disturbing number of child killings by mothers in recent years.
Andrea Yates drowned her five children in the family's Houston bathtub in 2001. In 2003, Deanna Laney beat her two young sons to death with stones in East Texas, and Lisa Ann Diaz drowned her daughters in a Plano bathtub. Dena Schlosser fatally severed her 10-month-old daughter's arms with a kitchen knife in 2004."
Seriously. What's going on in Texas? Why are so many mothers gettin' all Antigone all over the place? Joolie? You're down there. Any ideas?

It's disturbing, but I think it happens more than we think. About 10 years ago a woman in our town pushed her 2 kids off the top of a parking garage on campus. She then juumped too. I don't get it, but then again mental illness defies logic and reason.
Most if not all of these women suffered from severe postpartum depression or psychosis. Some of them were involved in Christian sects that taught that as women they were basically nothing. Some believed they were saving their children from evil.
The woman who killed her kids and herself this week was an immigrant who had recently left her abusive husband and by all accounts was trying very hard to get her shit together.
Obviously Texas doesn't have a lock on religious extremists or mental illness or desperate people, but we also lack funding for social services and have a certain macho, go-it-alone mentality that prevents a lot of people from seeking help. It makes me very sad.
thanks joolie. makes me feel sorry for writing about it so flippantly. :-(
